Choosing the right e-cig

This is a beginner's guide.  That is important, because experienced vapers sometimes want different things from their e-cigs than do beginners.  I am going to assume that, as a new 'vaper' you want simplicity - that is, you just want to get going with your vaping, and don't want to be bored to death by techno-babble (there's a lot of it out there).   Despite all the techno-talk,  e-cigs are very simple devices.  Don’t get into conversations about battery resistance or talk to people who go on about what voltage they vape at.  You will be both bored and confused very quickly.  An e-cig is simply

a)  a battery plus a cartomiser,

or

b) a battery plus an atomiser and

(b(i)) a cartridge or (b (ii)) a ‘tank’.

Please see the glossary on the left for explanations of terms and recommendations.

You just want to try it out, right?  So why spend a lot of money?  There are some e-cigs that cost more than £60 but they are overpriced and certainly not the kind of experiment with which to start your vaping experiment.  You might not like it – and then, you’ve just blown £80, £100 or more.

The following diagram is a rough guide to the kinds of e-cig available and the costs involved:

When you want to take your first steps into the world of e-smoking (or 'vaping'), follow these guidelines:

1)    Don't spend too much money, for the simple reason that you might not like it;

2)    Avoid tank systems;

3)    Avoid manual batteries;

4)    Avoid atomiser/tank and atomiser/cartridge combos;

5)    Go for a simple 2-piece (battery/cartomiser) 'plug-and-play' combo, or a good disposable.
